Regulation

Regulation is the controlling of a certain thing by a higher authority, in order to restrict certain things from particular group of people.

The Video Standards Council regulates video games for the UK, deciding the age rating for video games.

The Independent Press Standards Organisation  controls the British press, maintaining a ‘high standard of journalism’, making sure people can freely express their freedom of the press.

The British Board of Film Classification, and it is an authority that is responsible for the age classification of films and television programmes.

I believe that regulations should exist, but the people who are deciding the regulations should be unbiased in gender, race, and in some cases, age. If we do this, then the classifications on things such as video games, films and TV programmes can be rated as fairly as possible. It should also not be something that is controlled by the government, as middle aged politicians are not the ideal group of people to decide what’s best for everyone, the regulators need to have diversity.

Regulations are important, as we do not want certain things to be exposed to certain people, such as violent video games and films to young, impressionable children. If we do not have regulations on films and video games, potentially anything can be released to the public, and it could be something that can be harmful to others, so things that should be banned from the public would be published, as there is nobody stopping the publishing of these products.

In terms of the press, we need it to be regulated, as we do not want harmful hate messages to be spread across the public, or anything that can be seen as indoctrination. Freedom of the press cannot be entirely free, otherwise the public could be exposed to some essentially dangerous, distressing things.
